Promote Students

The promote process will add one grade level to each student in your school. For students currently in the highest grade level, the promote process will set their grade level to "Inactive". Note that Inactive students will remain accessible to both administrators and teachers, to review grades, etc.

Please be sure to promote your existing students BEFORE you add new students to your school. The promotion process will run for ALL students, and you do not want newly added students to be promoted (Kindergarten to First Grade for example).

This overview will introduce you to the main features of planbook.com. It only takes a few minutes, and is a great way to become familiar with how planbook.com "works".

You can exit the overview at any time, and can always view it later by clicking on your display name (upper right corner) and selecting Overview.

Add or Edit Lessons

Perhaps the first thing you'll want to know is how to add or edit lessons in your plans. To add or edit a lesson, you can either single click on the lesson title (class name), or double click anywhere on the lesson.

You can also use the action arrow in the upper right corner of each lesson to edit, copy/paste, bump (move to next day), extend (copy to next day) or delete your lesson.

Note that before you add lessons, you'll want to create your classes (the subjects you teach). Your first class was automatically added when you created your planbook.com account, and we'll show you how to add additional classes later in this overview.

School Year List

The School Year List allows you to add a new school year to your plans, which you'll want to do at the start of each school year. You can also add years when you teach at multiple schools, and would like a separate set of plans for each school.

Planbook.com saves all your prior years, and you can also use the School Year List to switch between years, to easily view prior year plans.

Your first school year was automatically added when you created your planbook.com account, and we'll show you where to edit your school year later in this overview.

Teacher List

The Teacher List allows you to view each of your teacher's lesson plans.

To view a teacher, you simply select his or her name from the list. When you sign in to your account, the first teacher in your list will automatically be displayed.

Display Name

When you click on your Display Name, a menu will appear with the following options:

Account - Update your email address and password, check when your subscription expires, purchase your yearly subscription, and set up Google+ Integration
Contact Us - Send a message to our support team
Overview - Watch this overview of planbook.com
Tutorials - Watch one or more tutorial videos
Support - Connect to our knowledge base
Feedback - Tell us the features you'd like us to add
Sign Out - Sign out of your planbook.com account

Date Buttons

There are four buttons in planbook.com, to help you navigate to various dates in your plans:

Today - Takes you to the current date
Calendar - Allows you to select a date
Prior Arrow - Takes you to the prior day, week or month
Next Arrow - Takes you to the next day, week or month

Teacher Notes

The Teacher Notes button provides you with a simple notepad to keep track of any information you'd like to have available at the click of a button.

Your notes are not tied to a specific day or week, so the information you add to your notes will remain as long as needed. Teachers use this feature to capture a variety of information:

To Do list, materials list, reminders, etc.
Student pull out schedule
Important phone numbers
Account information (Scholastic, Discovery, BrainPop, etc.)

Student Announcements

The Student Announcements button provides you with a simple method to communicate with your students and parents. It is used in combination with the Sharing feature (covered later in this overview) such that when you share your plans with your students, they will also be able to view any information you place in Student Announcements.

Student Announcements are not tied to a specific day or week, and your students will be able to view this information until you update or remove it. You can use Student Announcements to remind students of important upcoming events, assignment due dates, materials to bring to class, etc.

Substitute Notes

The Substitute Notes button provides you with a place to store general classroom information that would be helpful to a substitute teacher. This may include a list of students with special needs, classroom rules, bathroom procedures, transition activities, who to contact with questions, etc.

When you will have a substitute teacher for your class, you can simply print out your daily lesson plans, print out your Substitute Notes, and leave them on your desk. You can also save your plans and notes to a PDF file, and send them via email if you are not able to return to your classroom.

Add Item

The Add button allows you to quickly add a variety of items to your plans. The following items can be added via the Add button:

Assessment
Assignment
Class
Event
Extra Lesson
Template
Unit

Note that each of these items can also be added to your plans by using the Go To button to jump to the appropriate view.

Comments

The Comments button allows teachers and administrators to send and receive comments between one another.

When a teacher posts a comment it will be shared automatically with all administrators connected to the school account. Administrators are able to send comments to individual teachers.

When a teacher or administrator receives a new comment, they will see a notification icon to let them know a new comment has been added.

Print to PDF

The Print to PDF button allows you to save and print your plans via a PDF file. You have the following options when printing:

Print View - Week, Day, Class or Events
Print Items - Lesson sections to include
Print Range - Date range to print
Print Layout - Portrait or landscape, one or two page layout

Hide All / Show All

The Hide/Show button allows you to easily hide all lesson detail from your Plan view (only lesson titles will show). Click it again to bring all your lesson detail back to the display.

View Options

The View button allows you to control the information you see in your plans.

Timeframe - You can choose to view your plans by Week, Day, Month or List
Items - You can choose the specific items (such as lesson sections, class times, standard descriptions, etc.) you want to show or hide in your plans
Classes - You can select which classes to show or hide in your plans

Plans

The Plans button takes you back to your lesson plans.

This is the default view each time you login to your plans.

Assessments

The Assessments button takes you to a list of all your assessments. You can select to view all of your assessments, all assessments for a single class, or all assessments for a single class unit.

Assignments

The Assignments button takes you to a list of all your assignments. You can select to view all of your assignments, all assignments for a single class, or all assignments for a single class unit.

Classes

The Classes button takes you to a list of your classes. You can add new classes, make a change to an existing class, or remove a class.

Adding classes (subjects) to your plans is how you create your schedule in planbook.com, and you'll need to do this before you can enter lessons into your plans.

For each class you add, you select a class color, specify the class start and end date, and enter the days and times you teach the class.

Display Settings

The Display button allows you to customize your lessons.

Specifically, your lessons can have up to 8 sections, and you have the ability to name each section as appropriate. For example, you may want to create lesson sections for Objectives, Materials, Warm-Up, Activity, Assessment, etc.

Note that the first 6 sections are "open" sections, which you can use any way you would like. Section 7 is used for your My List items, and section 8 is used for State and National standards.

Events

The Events button takes you to a list of your events.

Your events are also displayed when viewing your lesson plans in the Week, Day and Month views, so this page is simply a way to see all your events in a list format.

Grades

The Grades button will take you to your Grades view, where you can capture grades on each assignment and assessment for your students.

You can also capture student performance on standards connected to your assignments and assessments.

Lesson Layouts

Lesson Layouts allow administrators to define the lesson structure they'd like their teachers to use when entering lessons into their plans. Administrators can decide how many sections to include in the layout, and the name and order of each lesson section.

If needed, multiple lesson layouts can be created for a school.

My Files

The My Files button takes you to a list of the files you have uploaded to your planbook.com account. You can then add, remove, or rename your files.

Note that any changes you make to your files will be reflected in all lessons where the file is attached.

My List

The My List button takes you to your My List items. You can add a new item, make a change to an existing item, or remove an item.

My List items can be used to store any information you regular add to your lessons, such as IEP goals, accommodation strategies, unit objectives, etc.

To add My List items to your lessons, you'll want to go to your Display page and enable the My List section, which will create a new "My List" tab when entering lessons.

School List

The School List button takes you to your School List items. You can add a new item, make a change to an existing item, or remove an item.

School List items can be used to store information your teachers regularly add to their lessons, such as school-specific learning objectives, accommodation/differentiation strategies, core instructional strategies, etc.

School Year

The School Year button allows you to manage your school year. You enter a name for the year, and specify the school year start and end dates.

Planbook.com also allows you to select the type of schedule used by your school or district:

One Week - Schedule is based on a typical week
Two Week - Schedule repeats every two weeks
Cycle - Schedule follows a cycle of days (2 - 20)

Sharing Options

The Sharing button allows you to control how you share your plans with others. You can share your plans in two ways.

Adding a Teacher Key will allow other teachers to import (copy) your lessons directly into their plans.

Adding a Student Key will allow students, parents, substitutes, etc. a way to view your plans online. You can also control what information is viewable, and how far into the future your plans can be viewed.

Standards Reporting

The Standards button allows you to run reports on the standards covered in your lessons.

You can select state or national standards, select subjects and categories, and select a lesson date range. The report will then tell you how many times each standard is included in your lessons.

Students

The Students button will take you to your Student view. This will allow you to add students to your account, as well as to assign students to your classes. For administrators, this view will allow you to add students to your school, and assign students to your teachers.

Once students are added, you can then allow them to access planbook.com via their accounts, to view teacher lesson plans and student performance.

Teachers

The Teachers button allows you to manage the teachers connected to your school. You are able to:

View all teachers connected to your school
Add teachers to your school account
Remove teachers from your school account
Reset teacher account passwords

Templates

The Templates button takes you to your templates. You can add new templates, make a change to an existing template, or remove a template.

Templates allow you to add repeating information to your plans (e.g. "Spelling Quiz" each Friday for your Spelling class) to save you from entering this information into each lesson.

Units

The Units button takes you to your class units. You can add new class units, make a change to an existing unit, or remove a unit.

Units provide way to structure and group your lessons, assignments, and assessments, and help facilitate long term planning efforts.

Search Lessons

The Search button allows you to search your lessons for a specific word or phrase. The search will look through all of your classes for the current school year as well as prior school years, and return up to 50 lessons that match your criteria. Your returned lessons will be sorted with the most recent lesson shown first.

Searching is a quick way to locate a lesson you have previously taught, and then easily copy/paste the content to another lesson to allow you to teach the lesson once again.
